Which type do I need?

Start with the existing equipment, connections, dimensions, and installation instructions. These guides help you know what to check before choosing a product.

Which type do I need? Range hoods
  • Ducted hoods exhaust outdoors. Ductless hoods filter air and return it to the room. Confirm which arrangement your space supports.
  • Check the hood width, mounting type and the exact model’s duct or recirculation requirements.
  • For a convertible model, confirm the required filters or conversion kit and whether they are included.
Which type do I need? Water heaters
  • Storage models keep a tank of heated water. Tankless models heat water as it flows through the unit.
  • Confirm the existing fuel or electrical supply, available space, household demand and venting arrangement.
  • Ask your installer to verify capacity, connections and the exact model’s installation requirements before ordering.
Which type do I need? Plumbing fittings
  • Match the pipe material, nominal size and connection style. Similar-looking fittings may use different connections.
  • Confirm whether the connection is threaded, compression, push-to-connect, soldered or solvent-welded.
  • Check the manufacturer’s approved application, pressure and temperature limits for the exact fitting.
Which type do I need? Air filters
  • Record the existing filter’s labeled size and check the actual filter opening. Nominal and actual dimensions can differ.
  • Confirm filter thickness and the filtration rating your HVAC equipment supports; a higher rating is not automatically the right choice.
  • Follow the equipment and filter manufacturers’ inspection and replacement guidance for your conditions.
Which type do I need? Door hardware
  • Check door thickness, the existing bore and the backset—the distance from the door edge to the center of the handle opening.
  • Choose the function you need, such as passage, privacy or keyed entry, and confirm the finish.
  • Confirm handing and compatibility using the exact model’s instructions; some products are reversible and others are not.

Where to find your model number

Look for the manufacturer identification label. Locations differ by brand and model; the diagrams below are general illustrations. Check accessible areas without moving heavy equipment or removing service panels.

Refrigerators

Illustration only — the label position varies by model.

Check accessible interior side walls and the door-opening area. Labels may be inside the fresh-food compartment or another location shown in the owner’s manual. An energy label or a retailer sticker is not necessarily the model/serial label.

Ranges & ovens

Illustration only — the label position varies by model.

Check the accessible oven door frame or drawer-opening area specified by the manufacturer. Do not pull the range away from a gas or electrical connection to search for a label.

Dishwashers

Illustration only — the label position varies by model.

Open the door and inspect the accessible door edge and tub frame. Copy the model and serial number from the manufacturer label, rather than the name printed on the control panel.

Water heaters

Illustration only — the label position varies by model.

Look for the manufacturer rating/data label on the accessible outer jacket. Record the model and serial number separately from capacity, fuel, voltage, and input ratings. Do not remove burner or electrical access covers.

Washers

Illustration only — the label position varies by model.

Check the door-opening area or the area under the lid indicated in the manual. Top-load and front-load machines can have different label locations. Photograph a rear label only if it is already safely accessible.

Dryers

Illustration only — the label position varies by model.

Check the accessible door opening and frame. Confirm whether the dryer is gas or electric using its rating label or documentation; record both the full model and serial number.

Copy the complete model and serial number

Include every letter, number, dash, and suffix. Photograph the label when readable, and record the apartment, building, installation date, and technician on your equipment installation record.

Manufacturer model identification & support

Open the manufacturer’s own model-identification or support resources for its examples and exact-model documentation.

Start with the symptom

These are preliminary checks, not a diagnosis. Follow the exact product manual. Stop using equipment with gas odors, sparks, scorching, or active leaks and seek appropriate qualified help.

Range hood: noisy or weak airflow
  • Identify whether the installed hood vents outdoors or recirculates through filters.
  • Check the owner’s manual for filter inspection and cleaning. Replaceable charcoal filters and washable grease filters have different requirements.
  • Record the fan setting, noise, and whether the symptom changed after filter care. Persistent noise or weak extraction needs further review.

Door does not latch
  • Check whether the door reaches the frame without rubbing and whether the latch lines up with the strike plate.
  • Note visible loose hardware, weatherstripping interference, or changes after painting. Do not force or disable the latch.
  • Record door handing, backset, finish, and existing hardware model before choosing a replacement.

Faucet drips or leaks
  • Identify where the water appears: spout, handle, base, or supply connection.
  • Record the brand, fixture model, and whether the symptom involves hot water, cold water, or both.
  • Use the exact parts diagram to identify cartridges, seals, and connection parts. If the leak is active or the shutoff is uncertain, request qualified help.

Washer will not drain or complete a cycle
  • Record any error code and the cycle where the machine stops.
  • Check user settings, load instructions, and the visible drain hose for a kink without disconnecting plumbing or moving the machine.
  • Follow only the owner’s manual procedure for any user-accessible drain filter. Water can be hot; an unresolved problem needs service.

Dishwasher cleans poorly or leaves water
  • Check loading, detergent, and rinse-aid instructions for the exact model. Keep dishes from obstructing spray-arm movement.
  • Inspect and clean a user-removable filter only as described in the manual.
  • Record any error code and whether water remains after the complete cycle. Continued drainage problems need review before ordering a pump or hose.

Refrigerator temperature seems wrong
  • Check the selected temperature setting and whether packages block interior air passages or prevent doors closing.
  • Note damaged or dirty door gaskets and recent loading, installation, or power interruptions.
  • Measure and record the actual compartment temperature using an appropriate thermometer. Follow food-safety guidance and request service if temperatures remain unsuitable.

Dryer takes too long or does not dry
  • Check the load and selected cycle against the owner’s manual.
  • Clean the user-accessible lint screen using the approved procedure. A screen that appears clean does not prove the exhaust path is clear.
  • Report unusually hot operation, burning odors, damaged venting, or recurring long cycles. Exhaust-path inspection or gas/electrical diagnosis needs qualified service.

Range or oven is not working as expected
  • Check the selected mode and any control-lock or timer settings described in the manual.
  • Record the error code and whether one function or the whole appliance is affected.
  • Do not open electrical covers, adjust gas components, or repeatedly reset a tripping circuit. Share the exact model and symptoms with a qualified service provider.

Water heater: not enough hot water
  • Record the model, fuel or energy type, capacity, and any visible status code.
  • Note whether all fixtures or only one fixture are affected, and whether demand recently changed.
  • Use the manual’s status-code guidance. Do not open service covers, adjust gas controls, or increase temperature as a general fix; request a qualified diagnosis.

Care & cleaning

The exact model, finish, and material determine the approved method. Use the manufacturer’s care instructions to choose products and procedures; a cleaner suitable for one finish may damage another.

Stainless steel & coated finishes
  • Identify whether the surface is bare stainless steel or a fingerprint-resistant or other coated finish.
  • Use a soft cloth and a cleaner approved for that exact finish. Follow the manufacturer’s direction for wiping, rinsing, and drying.
  • Avoid abrasive pads, steel wool, and unapproved chemicals. Do not assume stainless-steel polish is suitable for a coated surface.
Flooring: vinyl, laminate, tile & wood
  • Identify the flooring material and finish before choosing a cleaner. Remove loose grit using a method approved for the floor.
  • Follow the flooring manufacturer’s limits for water, cleaning concentration, and equipment.
  • Do not assume steam, soaking, wax, or a tile cleaner is suitable for vinyl, laminate, or wood. Report loose flooring or open joints before wet cleaning.
Faucets, fixtures & decorative finishes
  • Identify the finish: chrome, brushed, painted, plated, or another coating may need different care.
  • Use the finish manufacturer’s approved cleaner and a soft cloth. Follow any rinsing and drying directions.
  • Do not assume an acid descaler, bleach, abrasive pad, or soak is safe for every finish, aerator, or seal.
Range-hood grease & charcoal filters
  • Confirm the hood model and filter type before removing or ordering a filter.
  • Follow the manual for removing and cleaning washable grease filters, including whether dishwasher cleaning is allowed.
  • Do not wash a charcoal filter unless its exact instructions allow it. Replacement and cleaning schedules depend on the filter and use.
Refrigerators, ranges & dishwashers
  • Find the care section for the exact model and identify which parts are user-removable.
  • Use only approved cleaners and methods for interior liners, glass, seals, burners, racks, and control panels.
  • Do not use oven-cleaning products or self-clean procedures on other appliances or parts unless their exact instructions permit it.
Air filters & cooling equipment
  • Record the existing filter dimensions, airflow direction, and equipment model. Confirm the approved filter type before replacement.
  • Follow the equipment and filter instructions for inspection, cleaning, or replacement; not every filter is washable.
  • Use the verified interval for your model and conditions when creating a reminder. Do not assume one rating or replacement interval suits every system.
Washers & dryers
  • Check the model’s instructions for detergent dosing, dispenser care, door seals, and any cleaning cycle.
  • Clean the dryer lint screen as directed; use the approved process for any washing-machine filter.
  • Keep records of cleaning and any continuing odor, leak, or drying issue. Internal service and exhaust-path work may need a qualified provider.
